The Setting
Library of AUBREY HENRY MAITLAND ALLINGTON's house
at Marlow.
The room is handsomely furnished.
At back c.-somewhat deeply recessed--double French windows,
approached from the room by shallow steps, open to a terrace, and
command a view of the river and the landscape beyond. In the recess
and to the L. of the window, built into the wall, is a bookcase, and below
this, in the angle of the room facing the audience, a door.
At the extreme L. of the room is a low-backed arm-chair, and
behind it, against the wall, a bronze statuette with an electrolier(chandelier).
Below the window L.C. a large settle couch with cushions is set at an
angle facing R., and immedwtely above it, and at its right end, a small,
square table on which is a telephone.
In the right wall of the window recess, facing the bookcase, is a low
cabinet, and in the wall above it a speaking-tube. On the right of this,
in the wall facing the audience, stands a grandfather's clock.
On the right of the clock, right center in the back flat, are large double door,
which lead to a passage from which a stairway rises to the right, and
at the foot of the stairway a large leaded window.
The square, stone fireplace is in the right wall, with bronze and irons
ln the hearth and a fender stool against the high curb. Above it a
small dinner waggon (tea cart).
Right center is a gate-legged table, which at the rise of the curtain is laid
for breakfast : there is a small chair behind it and one is set on its right.
A winged arm-chair immediately in front of the fireplace and a smaller
one facing it.
